BrainStorm is a close-knit gang of fruity friends who delight in throwing a good party. Long tired of hearing people
complain about parties which followed the same old formula, we decided to take the law into our own hands with d-rail.
Lee had used a train for a corporate function, so she suggested that we get our filthy mits on just such a train and
throw a party. Suffice it to say, we were not hard to convince. At our first brainstorming session, we tried to come up
with a name for ourselves and the party - thus 'd-rail' and 'BrainStorm' were born amidst a flurry of chatter,
maniacal cackling, and pasta.
The first d-rail was daunting. We had within our group the skills necessary to put it all together, but we also had a
lot to learn. We met weekly for dinner and discussion. How were we going to power everything? What were the interior
dimensions of each carriage? Which DJ's would play? Would we to sell enough tickets to cover our costs? It was a
frightening exercise, which entailed a lot of running around to scope out carriages, generators, speakers and
lights. We also had to hijack old election posters to use for decor. We worked furiously, phoning people back and
forth to ensure that everything would run smoothly.
We split ourselves into key responsibility groups: Decor, Sound and Lighting, Technical, DJ's and Bar. In the center
was crisis control - the hub which held everything together. After all, we only had the day of the party to set up -
there was no margin for error. Ironically enough, on the day of the party, we discovered that the speakers almost didn't
fit through the doors. We only JUST got everything finished. Needless to say the first d-rail was a raging success that
would take some beating.
d-rail II (In-house Training) did just that. We knew what to do, we knew how to do it. We were determined to outdo
ourselves and despite the extra carriages, lighting and sound, operations ran smoothly. Before we knew it, it was
d-day and we only just managed to herd everyone onto the train before it lurched into the highveld night, music
pumping and lights flashing. We couldn't sit still and were met with endless compliments as we missioned back
and forth. From the looks on the faces as we made our way through the crazy crowds, we'd done it. We'd outdone
ourselves. We were overjoyed.
Now, filled with enthusiasm, confidence and the energy only an impending d-rail can inspire, our dedicated crew is
once again keeping the wheels in motion. We hope to make this year's party something everyone will remember for the
rest of their lives. From the looks of things, we're on the right track........
